From Pizza Delivery Driver to Billion-Pound Fitness Empire
5 April 2026
Ben Francis started Gymshark in 2012 as a 19-year-old at Aston University, working from his parents' garage with a sewing machine while delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut.
The Influencer Strategy
Francis was one of the earliest entrepreneurs to recognise the power of fitness influencers on YouTube. He sent free products to popular fitness YouTubers, and the brand gained authentic credibility with young gym-goers.
Explosive Growth
The BodyPower fitness expo in 2013 was the breakthrough — their stand was mobbed by fans. Gymshark went from a garage operation to millions in revenue, entirely self-funded for eight years.
Unicorn Status
In 2020, General Atlantic acquired a 21% stake for £200 million, valuing Gymshark at over £1 billion. Francis became one of the UK's youngest billionaires. Gymshark now serves millions of customers in 131 countries.
