The Guatemalan Professor Who Made Language Learning Free for the World
8 March 2026
Luis von Ahn grew up in Guatemala and studied at Carnegie Mellon, where he invented CAPTCHA — those "prove you're human" tests used across the internet. He then created reCAPTCHA, which Google acquired for an undisclosed amount.
Making Education Free
Von Ahn's next mission was bigger: make high-quality language education free for everyone. Growing up in Guatemala, he saw that good education was only available to those who could afford it.
Gamifying Language Learning
Duolingo launched in 2012 with a game-like approach to language learning — streaks, points, leaderboards, and a persistent green owl mascot. The app made learning addictive rather than tedious.
$6.5 Billion IPO
Duolingo went public in 2021 at a $6.5 billion valuation. It now has over 500 million registered users learning 40+ languages. Von Ahn proved that a mission-driven product can also be a massive business — Duolingo is now the world's most popular education app.
