The Freshman Who Built Computers in His Dorm and Created a $50 Billion Empire
7 April 2026
Michael Dell enrolled at UT Austin in 1983 as a pre-med student, but from his dorm room he began buying excess computer stock, upgrading machines, and selling them directly to customers with just $1,000 in capital.
Dropping Pre-Med
His parents wanted him to be a doctor. After his freshman year, during which his dorm-room business hit $80,000 in monthly revenue, he dropped out. He incorporated as "PC's Limited" in 1984 at age 19.
The Direct Model Revolution
The direct-to-consumer model proved revolutionary. By 1988, Dell Computer Corporation went public at $85 million. The build-to-order approach minimised inventory costs and let customers configure exactly what they wanted.
A Global Giant
Dell Technologies is now worth over $50 billion, employing over 130,000 people worldwide. Dell's dorm-room hustle pioneered the direct sales model that transformed the PC industry.
