The German Teenager Who Accidentally Built the Backbone of E-Commerce
23 March 2026
Tobias Lutke grew up in Koblenz, Germany, where he started programming at age 12. He never attended university — instead, he completed a computer programming apprenticeship. In 2004, he moved to Canada and tried to open an online snowboard shop.
The Accidental Platform
Existing e-commerce tools were terrible, so Lutke built his own using Ruby on Rails. The snowboard shop, Snowdevil, worked well — but Lutke realised the software he'd built was more valuable than the shop itself.
Launching Shopify
In 2006, he launched Shopify as a standalone e-commerce platform. The idea was simple: let anyone create a professional online store without knowing how to code. Early growth was slow but steady.
Powering Millions of Businesses
Shopify went public in 2015 and grew massively, especially during COVID-19 when millions of businesses moved online. It now powers over 4 million stores globally and has a market cap exceeding $100 billion. Lutke proved that sometimes the best companies are built accidentally while trying to solve your own problem.
