He Emptied His Savings Three Times Before Building a $3 Billion Scheduling Tool
11 March 2026
Tope Awotona emigrated from Lagos, Nigeria, to the US as a teenager. He studied at the University of Georgia and worked in sales at companies like Dell and EMC. Frustrated by the endless back-and-forth of scheduling meetings, he decided to build a solution.
Three Failed Startups
Before Calendly, Awotona had invested his savings into three different startup ideas — all failed. For Calendly, he emptied his 401(k) retirement savings and put everything he had into the company.
Product-Led Growth
Launched in 2013, Calendly grew almost entirely through word-of-mouth. When someone received a Calendly link, they often signed up themselves. This viral loop drove growth with virtually zero marketing spend.
$3 Billion Valuation
Calendly reached a $3 billion valuation in 2021 with over 10 million monthly active users. Awotona became one of the wealthiest Black tech founders in the world. The company is highly profitable, proving that a simple, well-executed product can beat complex, well-funded competitors.
