The Quiet Engineer Who Built TikTok and Changed How the World Consumes Content
9 April 2026
Zhang Yiming studied software engineering at Nankai University in Tianjin, China, graduating in 2005. He was quiet and studious, more interested in code than socialising, and built several apps before founding ByteDance in 2012.
The Algorithm That Changed Everything
ByteDance's breakthrough was its AI-powered recommendation engine. Rather than relying on social graphs (who you follow), it learned what each user wanted to see and served it instantly. The first hit product was Toutiao, a news aggregation app in China.
TikTok Takes the World
In 2017, ByteDance acquired Musical.ly and merged it with its international short-video app to create TikTok. The app exploded globally, reaching 1 billion users faster than any social platform in history.
$220 Billion Valuation
ByteDance became the world's most valuable private company at over $220 billion. Zhang stepped down as CEO in 2021, citing personal preference for less public roles. His story shows that technical brilliance and algorithmic innovation can create world-changing platforms.
